Create Aeronautics: Legs & Coils

Electromagnetic levitation, gyroscopes and machines that walk on procedural legs for Create Aeronautics.

Released, v1.7.5Coming to Modrinth

Progress

3 of 6 roadmap features done. Goal: Give players technology capable of surviving in the Machine World.

Legs & Coils adds parts for the physics machines you build with Create Aeronautics. Superconductors float your machine, Electro Lift Coils push it in any direction, the Advanced Gyroscope keeps it level, and Brain Controllers give it legs.

Put a Brain Controller wherever a leg should be and the machine grows one there. The legs find footing on their own, step in a balanced rhythm (diagonal pairs on four legs, tripods on six), carry the machine's weight and keep it level, on slopes and over steps. A Locomotion Core steers it with redstone.

Roadmap features

  • Electromagnetic Levitation Done

Superconductor blocks lift ten times as hard as Levitite.

  • Advanced Gyroscopes Done

Keeps a machine level, or locks it to the angle it had when switched on.

  • Procedural Walking Machines Partly done

Rebuilt in 1.8.0: each Brain Controller is a leg that finds its own footing and steps in a balanced gait. In testing in game.

  • Inverse Kinematics Partly done

Every leg bends at the knee to reach its foot, worked out in the machine's frame so it holds while the machine turns and tilts. In testing with the new walking.

  • Coil Weapons Partly done

The first one, the Coil Weapon, arcs electricity into up to four targets within 10 blocks. It's in testing for the next update.

  • Machine Propulsion Done

Electro Lift Coils thrust in any of six directions; the Heavy Electro Lift pushes eight times harder.

Known issues

  • Crash

Crash when a Brain Controller moves a Swivel Bearing

Activating a linked swivel bearing crashed the game with ClassNotFoundException: RotaryConstraintHandle on Sable 2.x, which moved that class. Fixed in 1.7.6, and gone for good in 1.8.0: legs no longer use bearings.

    Fixed in the next update

  • Crash

    Crash on dedicated servers

The server crashed while loading because network code touched client-only classes. Fixed in 1.7.6.

    Fixed in the next update

  • Not done yet

Legs stand only on the world

Feet find footing on world blocks. They can't stand on other machines yet.

Changelog

  1. v1.8.0
    • New: the Coil Weapon, a short-range electrical weapon built from Electro Lift Coil technology.
    • New: Leg Power. Each leg's power (0.25x to 10x, default 1x) sets how much of the machine it may carry, so huge castles can stand and walk. The screen shows each leg's share of the mass, the power it needs, and whether it's overloaded.
    • Feet no longer flicker dark when they sink partly into the ground, at any leg size.
    • A leg that loses or finds its footing swings smoothly between its rest pose and its step instead of snapping.
    • Feet always land under their own hips: a ship just assembled no longer plants a foot in the wrong place, and a humanoid foot pushed out of place steps back.
    • Legs move smoothly between server updates, and legs on ships cast shadows with shader packs.
    • Locomotion Core sitting: redstone from below lowers the machine to the ground so players can climb on; it stands up 5 seconds after the signal stops.
    • New: the Humanoid Brain Controller, for two-legged robots. Legs hang straight under the hips and bend forward at the knee like a person's, on the same walking system as the insect legs. They walk upright on their own; two Advanced Gyroscopes make the walk perfectly straight.
    • Brain Controller screen: sliders for leg length (Auto or 1 to 64 blocks), 1 to 16 knees, width at the root and at the tip (up to 64 pixels) and leg power, plus the foot: none, a cube, or a claw.
    • Leg parts glow when the block they copy glows (Sea Lantern, Glowstone, Magma...).
    • Superconductors are now a plain block that thousands of can share a machine: no more slowdown when stacking them. Their electromagnetic field is an animated glow, with arcs and one hum per machine.
    • Walking machines stay safe under any build: two legs under a long netherite beam no longer spin up or launch it. Balancing uses each axis's real weight, settles smoothly, and has firm limits; a machine its legs can't hold tips gently onto its hull, and stops walking while it struggles.
    • Legs take their look from the blocks around the controller: the block below for the segments, the block above for the knees and foot. Iron and polished blackstone without them.
    • Leg surfaces no longer render inside out, and textures tile at block scale instead of stretching.
    • New models for the Locomotion Core (a pyramid artifact with an arrow showing the way it walks), the Brain Controller (a robotic joint) and the Advanced Gyroscope (nested gimbal rings around a spinning core).
    • Fixed broken Advanced Gyroscopes and leg controllers still showing on ships.
    • Fixed the Heavy Electro Lift's icon covering its neighbours in inventories.
    • The Link Controller is gone: legs don't need linking.
    • Walking rebuilt from scratch: a Brain Controller is now one leg. Place it where a leg should be, and the machine grows a leg there that finds footing, steps and carries its weight. No bearings or linking.
    • Legs step in a balanced rhythm: diagonal pairs on four legs, tripods on six, one at a time on three. The body sways over the planted feet when a step needs it, and stays level on slopes and steps.
    • The Gait Controller is now the Locomotion Core: redstone on its sides walks the machine forward, back and turns it.
    • The Probe Mover now shows how a walking machine plans its steps, while you hold it.
    • Fixed the crash on dedicated servers.
    • The mod list now shows the real version number.
  2. v1.7.5
    • Advanced Gyroscope with a 3D model.
    • Shader updates for the electromagnetic glow.
    • New shader for Superconductors.
    • First custom 3D block models.
    • Project started.
